Outreach

Over the past two decades, several U.S. federal organizations sought to develop STEM outreach programs to develop a more far-reaching workforce. Despite a large amount of resources, the outcomes did not meet the high expectations required for attracting young students from local communities into STEM programs. The exposure provided by these outreach programs is not enough to convert participants to STEM majors or strengthen student participation in the STEM workforce. Many programs incorporated activities to expose students to different levels of STEM. While this exposure might generate interest, students' confidence in their ability to meet the performance criteria of a STEM career, as well as their vision of a STEM career, must be developed. As such, QCAM strives to leverage existing successful outreach programs at NMSU, PVAMU, and NTU. We use the successful strategies and our involvement in these existing outreach programs and activities to promote STEM with an emphasis on AM.

Current QCAM Outreach activities include…

  • Leveraging the Pre-Engineering PREP program at NMSU

  • Partnering with the Elementary School Day at PVAMU

  • Leveraging Senior Day on the Hillat PVAMU

  • Leveraging the College of Engineering Enhancement Institute (Ce2I) at PVAMU

  • Leveraging summer outreach programs at NTU.

  • Fostering an ambassador program that engages undergraduate and graduate students to become student ambassadors to local K-12 schools.

A unique feature of QCAM’s Outreach plan is our ongoing partnership with the Creative Media Institute (CMI) at NMSU. This partnership allows us to produce professional high-quality short (30-60 secs) and long (3-10 minutes) videos from all QCAM activities to use for promotion of the QCAM Program. QCAM plans to extensively use this multimedia approach to increase the impact of our outreach activities and expand its coverage to have a national impact.
