NMSU Summer Outreach Activities
School may be out for the summer, but the QCAM team at NMSU was still hard at work last week with several K-12 outreach events.
For the 3rd year in a row, QCAM participated in the NM PREP academy for high school students. THE NM PREP Academy was designed to spark student interest in STEM, specifically in engineering, by offering hands-on activities that simulate real-world engineering experiences. This year, QCAM Director Dr. Borys Drach, and some of his graduate research assistants lead 8 local area high school students through several demonstrations and hands-on activities in the Non-Destructive Evaluation lab. The students learned about non-destructive evaluation techniques such as ultrasound and X-ray while also being introduced to different additive manufacturing equipment and technologies.
Later that same week, 13 middle school students from a nearby school district were brough by as a part of their “STEM Explorers” camp. Similar to the NM PREP academy, this camp is meant to expose middle school age students to the concepts, research, and careers available to them through projects like QCAM and the NNSA. This group of students really enjoyed learning about 3D printing and CT scanning technology. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for these future scientists.
